A Night Out That Sparks a Wonderful Advertising Option

With a young child at home, as some or many of your might know, it is difficult to get out of the house with your significant other for what my wife and I call, "date night". This term, which we coined from another couple we know, refers to a night when the wife and I head out on the town for dinner, a movie, or maybe a show of some sort, without our son.

Last night was our night out. We were lucky enough to snag a baby sitter, who is referred to by our son as "mom-mom", and mother-in-law to me, for the evening. She arrived at our house around six in the evening and off we went.

My wife decided it would be a good idea to visit a local restaurant, which is in the category of fine dining. This decision was made because of an advertisement she saw in the local newspaper. The ad was talking about the establishment, what it had to offer, and their hours of operation. But what really finalized the deal for her (and me also), is the "buy one get one dinner entr? coupon that you could cut out and use.

The prices of this particular restaurant are on the higher end for my budget, so this coupon was a great way to experience an enjoyable atmosphere, fine dining and wonderful service, and save money. The coupon was only good for Wednesday night, which tells me that is more than likely their slowest of evenings. Their coupon program obviously worked because the place was packed. We didn't make a reservation so our wait was around forty-five minutes. With "mom-mom" watching our son at home, and our first night out together in a long time, would you care about the wait? We had our cell phones with us so if she really needed to get in touch with me or my wife we were just a phone call away.

This experience with this coupon is what leads me to write about today's advertising topic. There is nothing better then when you can share a real life experience and how it relates to helping others in their own advertising campaigns. I present this question. Are you running ads with coupons that could help those slow days or slow moving products?

This particular coupon we used helped this restaurant tremendously and chances are a similar campaign would work for you as well. I spoke with a friend of mine who runs a promotion company and when ticket sales to an event are slower then normal, he will step it up a notch and run a promotion in a local paper with a coupon to receive free photos, autographs and other low cost merchandise. For him as a promoter it is more important to have sold out arenas, so giving away some things is not that big of a deal.

Whatever your business entails, chances are you can work in a really good advertisement with a coupon that can spark some extra sales for that slow day or slow moving product. Another fascinating part of my own experience is that, my wife and I had such a wonderful time that we would strongly recommend the restaurant to friends and family. So their coupon also is getting customers to provide free word of mouth advertising as well. This could work for your business also.

Sit down and write up what your next advertisement will be, and make sure it includes a coupon that gets people to notice. You may start getting in sales you never knew or thought were possible.

Advertising Keeps Commerce Alive

Frequently I am asked, "What do you do for a living?" My reply varies, yet usually starts with, "I work at an advertising agency."

There are few individuals who understand what that means, usually because they're in the business, too.

I've found that there seems to be a certain mystique about what advertising agencies do. Many people look at me quizzically and inquire further, "What do you do there?"

It's an appropriate question as full-service advertising agencies perform a myriad of tasks for clients. It also isn't the most common profession, does not it lend itself well to a simple explanation.

So I explain further, "We as a team are responsible for client relations, advertising budget consultation, strategic planning and development, creative writing, directing, assisting with the production of radio and television commercials, public relations, print ad ideas and design - and finally- creating a finished ad campaign targeting the desired audience.

To put it simply, most managers and business owners don't have time to meet with all of the individual vendors and sales people from various media. That's where an agency comes in.

Truthfully, I wasn't sure what an advertising agency did until I began working in the business. Having always been drawn to media and social services, I have worked in newspaper and radio sales and for the government as well as local non-profit organizations. I didn't truly discover my passion until I worked in an agency environment.

My position is account manager, often referred to as account executive. The title doesn't come close to explaining all of the tasks required. Account Management requires creativity, the ability to multi- task and meet deadlines. I am responsible for meeting with clients and discussing their specific goals for growth in their industry. This is one of the most interesting aspects of my job. I have the opportunity to learn about different industries on a regular basis and it's never boring.

Once the client and I have determined what their goals are, it's my responsibility to take that information back to the agency and formulate an advertising plan that will help the client meet the outlined goals.

This process consists of industry research, working with our media department on budget plans, plus brainstorming ideas and creative services with our team and determining which forms of advertising are best suited to delivery of the specific message.

The creative services I am responsible for range from writing and assisting with production of radio and television commercials to copywriting for brochures, billboards or print advertising.

In some cases, the client will have a clear idea of what message they want to convey and the image they would like their business to have. In other instances we're asked to create a logo to successfully brand a business and position them in the minds of their consumer.

Either way, it's my job to put a strategic advertising plan in place and oversee the creative process to ensure the plan is executed in an effective and timely manner.

The true satisfaction comes when all of the media components work together in a successful campaign and my clients see tangible results. I enjoy what I do and think that I am very lucky to have found a career that is stimulating, creative, challenging, rewarding and effective. I am certain not everyone can say that about their chosen field.

There is no simple explanation of our industry or my position in particular. So, when speaking of my career I try to mirror the rule of thumb for billboards. The rule is simple. Billboards should be an exclamation about, not an explanation of, your product or service. With that being said, my exclamation is, "I love my career!!!" I really don't think there is a better endorsement than that. Having heard our industry referred to as "a necessary evil," I can say I understand that point of view on many levels. I have found, however, when executed properly and professionally, there is nothing evil about advertising. If one chooses to view advertising as a necessary evil, it is important to remember it is the necessary evil that keeps commerce alive.

Advertising Ethics

Advertisements for highly regarded, trustworthy companies almost never lie. They have to prove what they say to their own corporate counsel and the lawyers of the advertising agency. They will also need to prove it to the network's approval committee and to any number of regulatory bodies. With at least five different government agencies keeping an eye on advertising agencies, the cost of being caught cheating or lying is simply too high and not worth it.

Therefore, advertising agencies tell the truth, but not the whole truth. They portray their clients in their (the clients') best light. Advertisements seek to create a good first impression and are not seeking to aggravate the public. However, different people react to advertisements in different ways.

Advertising is a type of commercial speech and one has to be very conscious of the products and/or services you are advertising. Materials must not be misleading; and they must not advertise an illegal product. It is therefore important to know your advertising ethics before hand to save one the possibility of a lot of future problems and trouble.

Companies try all kinds of strategies to get the consumer's attention and money. Sometimes these are illegal or underhanded tactics. One of the problems is that these underhanded techniques work "too well" because they are based on deception, misdirection, and other highly sophisticated but acutely unethical techniques.

The advertising industry is constantly being bombarded by criticism. It has been accused of encouraging materialism and consumption; of stereotyping; of causing consumers to purchase items which they do not need; of taking advantage of children; of manipulating consumers' behavior; using sex to sell; and generally contributing to the downfall of society's social system.

Picture Stamps, A Great Way To Show Off Your Business

Trying to organize your office for your home business can be quite a task. Some people just don't bother, and spread everything around the kitchen table, or work out of their car.

I am sure you have seen those cars, they are the ones with everything jammed down by the windshield, fading in the sun, and the driver talking on a cell phone, while trying to manouver through traffic.

I finally organized a nice spot in my house, and then I realized just how much time I spend at the post office. I finally decided to download my postage and it has saved me hours.

Trying to operate your business, no matter what it is, is your passion, but it doesn't hurt every so often, to take a step back, smell the roses, and check out the latest in technology, and see if any of it will be of use to you and your business.

When I took that step back, I realized how much time I was wasting with getting postage, or running out of postage for my online business. When checking out the latest technologies out there, I also discovered a great affordable way to advertise. You can now get picture stamps. You simply take a picture with your digital camera and upload to a site, that sends you real postage stamps.

If you are an artist, you can have a picture of one of your pieces right on your envelope for all to see. They make the stamps big enough to see, and this is a great way to show off your work. You could do this with jewelry, needlework, art, the list is endless.

If you have a mailing list of customers, what better way to show off your work, than with custom stamps. Sometimes you just have to step back, and take a look at how you are running things, and you may just get one of those ahaha moments!

What You Need To Know To Boost Sales

When a consumer buys a product or avail of a particular service, what is the basis for his or her buying decision? Is it based on their need and want? Is it something that they saw and was attracted to the marketing tool such as the advertising booklet or the full color newsletter? Or is it something more? Does a client base his or her buying decision on certain requirements?

When we talk about a sale, as marketers and business owners, we always look at what drives our target market to buy a particular product. Because when we know what makes our clients tick, we would surely be able to draw them to try our products.

With so many things vying for your clients' attention everyday, it would probably be very difficult for you to attract them and make them notice your business. Just imagine that there are not just a hundred choices, but a thousand options for our clients to choose from. From the cereal they eat at breakfast, to the toothpaste they use before they go to bed - there is a huge abundance of offers in the market, not to mention that all these products have the same features and benefits. With an overwhelming list of similar merchandise, it is not surprising therefore that something unique and different would most likely get noticed by your target clients. What's more, once this unique quality gets into the marketplace, almost everyone would be trying to develop the same product - but at a lower price.

So how can you become a stand out that your target market would choose you? What makes your clients decide to buy your product? What makes you different from the rest of your competition? What drives a sale?

It's all about customer service - positive customer service, that is. This means that your audience was so satisfied with the kind of service you provided, from the start of your marketing campaign until the time that they actually experienced your type of service. It's in the advertising booklets you had for your marketing campaign, or even the full color materials you produced with a professional newsletter printing company. It's in the way you dress to impress, and the way you deliver your promise. All of these things contribute to your closing a sale with your clients and prospects.

These are the components of what will help you make a prospect become definite buyers of your products. It is the positive experience for that particular client from the time you reached out to them, till the time they end their deal with you.

If these experiences provide that special something that they're looking for, most likely that your brand and customer service would be successful in getting you the leads you need to grow your business. And what gets you the buying clients to boost your sale is the relationship that you build with your clients that will keep them coming back for more.

Magazine Advertising - Are You About To Throw Your Money Away?

One of the first marketing mistakes I made was buying print ad space in about three magazines. Can I recall one sale that I achieved through those ads? Not one. I don't think that I am the first or last person to make this mistake. In general, magazine advertising does not work for a small business. Here are a few do's and don'ts to consider before you decide whether to jump in.

Don't decide to advertise because of your competitors - You think you need to advertise in a magazine because your competitors have been running ads for months or maybe even years. When the salesperson calls, they tell you "we have x number of companies signed up so it must be working for them". How many people fell for that line? Your competitors might be throwing money away on this advertising. Just because they aren't making the most of their marketing budget, doesn't mean you have to follow suit.

Don't listen to the salesperson - Remember their job is to make the sale. Your job is to make the best decision for your business.

Don't sign up for a long series of insertions - Often times, you might be told that you need at least six insertions to get really noticed by the readers of the magazine. Having a six or twelve month commitment with an ad is an expense you do not need. Ads may be good for branding but we small businesses often do not have the luxury budget for branding. We need results.

Don't lose sight of your ROI - Magazine ads can be difficult to track. Even if you use a code on the ad, you might discover that a client noticed your ad but only made contact three or four months later. The code on your ad might have expired by then or it completely slipped their minds. This makes determining the return on the ad spend very difficult to determine.

If you still want to pursue magazine advertising, do commit to a short run of insertions. Refuse to pay the full rate-card price. In fact, tell them you are only interested in last minute space. When they are desperate to fill the page with paid ads, you might pay a quarter of the rate card.

Do pay attention to your results - If the ads are not working, stop them.

Of course, this does not apply for every small business in every market. The important message is you must think very carefully about how you will track your results and whether your money might be better spent on other forms of marketing.

Advertising Your Pizza Shop

For many small pizza shops and restaurants, success or failure can be determined by one crucial and often overlooked element: advertising. Proper advertising can push you to the top of your game. Lack of advertising can cause even the best efforts to come up short.

Of course, advertising alone isn't going to make yours the most successful shop in town. You still need to have all of the other important factors such as great food, fabulous customer service and a clean, comfortable shop in a good location. If you have those and then add appropriate advertising, your chances for success are good.

Here are two of the main ways to advertise your business.

Paid Advertising
Paid advertising includes ads that you pay for in newspapers, magazines and on television and billboards. The cost of the ad will depend on where you choose to advertise and how many people your ad will reach. For print ads, many newspaper and magazines will help you create an ad if you don't already have one. For television spots, you'll most likely have to produce the ad yourself which will, naturally, add substantially to the cost.

Public Relations
Public relations efforts involve finding ways to get the name of your business out in front of the public without purchasing an ad. There are many ways to go about this, but one important thing you must remember is that unlike paid advertising, you have no control over what is written about your shop.

Some ideas include hosting a charity event or going for some sort of record such as largest pizza or most people fed in an hour. If a tragedy happens in your area, offer to hold a special event where a percentage of all money raised will go to help the victims.

Once you decide on a special event, send press releases as far in advance as possible. Send press releases to local news stations, newspapers and anyone else you think might be interested in covering your event. If you are unsure how to write a press release, you can have one custom written starting at around $50 on websites such as Elance.com.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the press will cover your event, but local news teams are looking for news just as much as you're looking for coverage. If your event is newsworthy, you have a great chance of scoring some coverage. Below are some more specific ideas for special events.

• Sponsor local events such as 5k runs. Your name will be displayed on signs at the event, and will be printed on any written materials, such as programs.

• Have a contest or giveaway. Giving something away is a great way to get the attention of a lot of people. Make it a funny contest and you just might get the added bonus of news coverage. For example, everyone who comes to your shop dressed as a slice of pizza gets a free slice. Again, press releases in advance are key!

• Offer a program for neighborhood children who make good grades such as a free slice for every A or B. Let the schools and the press know about your program.

Other ideas:

• See if a local movie theater or bowling alley wants to team up. You could promote each other's business by selling packages such as "movie tickets and a pizza for only $??" You would sell the packages at both locations increasing sales for each of you.

• Pick a day of the week that is typically slow and make it, for example "Two for One Tuesday." You'll want to back this up with some local advertising, but everyone likes a deal. Your slow day just might turn into your best day.

Getting your name out there is an important part of the battle. Doing so in whatever positive manner you can will only help your bottom line.

Postcard Marketing is an effective way of marketing one's product and services. Postcards go way back in history for its usefulness as a means of communication. And to this day it has always remained as one of the most effective and successful means of communication for personal as well and business needs. Ever since its inception it has maintained a positive bond with users all over the world.

People who are looking for advertising their products or services can avail postcard marketing. It is one of the most effective and affordable advertising tool. And it is also useful for those who are looking for bulk mailing services.

Bulk mailing services through postcards usually result in extraordinary response for the product. Bulk mailing can be done online as well as offline through newspapers and magazines. Bulk mailing services always ensure positive and effective response and has thus become quite a popular way of marketing today.

While marketing the services within the neighborhood or community one can print personalized postcards as an invitation for a service demonstration or for a small seminar on the service.

Postcards come in different sizes and sometimes if the client so wishes the companies also makes custom sized postcards for them. While printing a postcard the client must keep the message short and succinct to drive the message in faster. This will ensure a positive response. Printing and mailing postcards is the cheapest way of attracting the right consumers.

While the client chooses the postcard marketing company, he must make sure that the company also offers to bulk mail the cards. The most common features which are offered by the postcard marketing companies are:

Providing graphic designs
Printing postcards
Providing and preparing mailing list
Addressing

The client may choose to design his own postcard. But if he wishes the company will do it for him. These companies have a wide range of graphics and designs to choose from. And thus the client will have a custom made postcard ready for marketing. The postcards are generally printed in bright and contrasting colors to attract consumers. Sometimes they also provide suggestions for mailing to prospective and target consumers.

Postcard marketing has become one of the most successful product campaigning tools. It is effective for reaching out to bulk consumers as well as a small group of people. It is affordable and fast and it has the added advantage of returning back to the mailer if the address is not found. Thus the client will have an exact count on how many consumers he has reached.

What Do Customers Say About Aerial Advertising?

The aerial advertising companies think that airplane messages are incredibly worthwhile. Advertisers might be enchanted with the novelty of having their ad flown over a busy beach or festival.

But what do consumers think? It would seem a waste for advertisers to spend a good deal of money on advertising that won't be worthwhile, that consumers won't respond to, that won't bring customers and money to the door.

Advertisers will be happy to know, then, that consumers think highly of aerial advertising. They enjoy watching the banner ads, and they remember the ads long after they are gone.

In 2004, a Miami Beach survey of 2,194 beachgoers backed this up. After seeing airplane messages in the sky, they were asked some questions about the advertising. The results were interesting and useful to potential aerial advertisers.

Other forms of advertising might be remembered for a short period of time, especially if the message is unique, but most consumers don't recall the information for very long.

So what's enlightening is that in the survey of beachgoers a stunning majority of people not only remembered the banner ads they saw, they remembered them for a long period of time.

Beachgoers were asked if they remembered the banner that passed over in the past 30 minutes. The response? 88% of them had. It's hard to imagine another advertising medium that could boast of 88% of the people remembering it 30 minutes later.

In fact, most people pay little attention to advertising, unless the message is unique or the way of communicating the message is unique (as in a duck, cavemen, or something similar). But sometimes how you present that message is what's unique (as in aerial advertising) and that's what people pay attention to. Once you have that attention, you can get your message across in a clearer way than you might think.

The advantage of airplane advertising is that it is unique. It's not like all the advertising that we see on any given day - billboards, radio ads, and newspaper and television ads. When that plane flies over, towing a banner and a message, we all look up. We pay attention. We remember.

And this statistic bears that out - 79% of the people questioned remembered what was being advertised on the airplane banner. This is 30 minutes after the banner passed over. This backs up what aerial advertising companies already know - airplane messages work. The medium is unique enough that people notice it and they remember it. An advertiser can ask for little more than that.

Finally, the best news for advertisers - 67% of those beachgoers surveyed said they remembered at least half of the message of the airplane advertising. When people remember the message, they remember the advertiser. They seek out the product or service being advertised.

The bottom line is, consumers respond to aerial advertising. They enjoy looking at it, they pay careful attention to it and (best of all) they remember it. Whether alone or combined with other forms of advertising, an advertiser's dollar goes far when used for plane advertising.

Aerial Advertising services are available from companies that specialize in this type of advertising. The Internet is a good source of information when it comes to choosing aerial advertising services. Arnold Aerial Advertising is one of the companies that provide such services. Located in New York, Arnold Aerial Advertising provides nationwide service with affordable rates.

Plan For Development - And Save Your Sign!

In the over 300 billboard signs I have owned, only two have been lost to development. I achieved this not out of sheer luck, although I have been lucky, but by being proactive about avoiding risks and mitigating the risks I can't avoid.

In most billboard ground leases, you have to give the property owner a right to terminate in the event of development. Obviously, few people will tie up their land for years when it might sour a huge development offer down the road. As a result, your billboard is at risk of being removed at any time with so many days of advance notice.

When this is the case, there are several things you can do to reduce or eliminate this risk.

Flip It If The Land Is Hot

Anyone can see land parcels that have a huge risk of immediate development. If you see a piece of raw land between two office buildings, or a piece of raw land between a Wal-Mart and Home Depot, then you are looking development right in the eye.

Except for cases of environmental pollution or unsuitable terrain, such a relationship makes buildings a billboard a bad idea if you are hoping for longevity. Don't skip this location, just get a ground lease and permit and immediately sell it to another billboard company. You can use this capital to finance a more permanent location. In just about every case in which I predicted development, it has come to pass. Not that I'm some sort of mind-reader: it just made sense that the land was too hot not to be developed in the near future.

Add Two Provisions Quietly Into Your Ground Lease Termination Provision

Be sure that your termination provision requires a building permit requiring removal of the billboard, and that it also includes language restricting any billboard to be built on the property for a period of at least 5 years. This is to ensure that the owner does not use the development "out" to replace you with a higher paying competitor.

Build Your Billboard In Areas That Can't Be Built On

If you want to sleep soundly at night, deliberately build your billboard within the setback requirements for whatever can be built on the land. For example, if your sign is on multifamily land, and is less than 20 feet inside the property line. Most billboard setbacks are less than the building setbacks. I like to build signs right on the property line using " full-flag offset" monopole designs that make this possible. I also like to build on the edge of ravines or other obstructions that would also be impossible to build on.

Don't Give Up When You Get A Termination Letter

When you get a termination letter, which I hope you never do, the first step is to cordially request a meeting with the landowner. You still have several attempts to save the sign:

¬ Offer him more money. Sometimes, you can "greenmail" your way out of your problem. If he was getting 20% of the gross, offer to change to a 50/50 split of the net, or some other highly ulcerative option.

¬ Offer him one side of the sign for free for a certain period of time to promote his development.

¬ Ask him to allow your sign to stay until the construction is completed (this can take about a year). Sometimes, while your sign is still there, the development project crashes, and the whole problem goes away (lost financing, lost anchor tenant, etc.)

¬ Offer to sell him the sign for what you have in it to become his own premise sign for the development.

If you follow these steps you will greatly reduce or eliminate your exposure to losing your sign to development. Being proactive can save you a fortune and a lot of mental anguish, which you can put to better use building more signs.

Advertising Ideas And Tools

Today advertising is extremely expensive and time consuming. The purpose of this article is to give you some ideas where you can advertise and to show you the tools you can use to promote your business.

Media Advertising

Advertising on media has lots of power because people use media everyday in order to keep themselves informed of an event such as news, shopping, education, or entertainment. The most popular medias are television, radio, newspaper, and magazine. Advertise on these types of media is very expensive, specially on television, but it gives good results. In this section, I will show you the tools you can use to advertise on newspapers and magazines without expending lots of money.

MEDIABIDS

With Mediabids you can buy advertising by creating an auction and letting the magazines and newspapers compete for your advertising dollars. You can also buy ads without creating an auction. The auction idea is because here you can setup a budget and the newspaper or magazine company have to bid not higher than your budget. Also check for the advertising specials Mediabids has on the front page.

Advertising On Your Vehicle

Using your vehicle to place your own ad will give you unlimited impressions. You can place a signs and graphics on any glass, door, trunk, or hook of your vehicle. You can use companies like FastSigns, DomainPlates.com, Drivertise.com, or you can look up on your local yellow pages for companies that make signs for vehicles.

License Plate Advertising.

Here you have to option to advertise on your license plate. Option one, you can buy a personalized license plate at your DMV or Department of Motor Transportation. Personalized license plates are not expensive and that will help you boost your business by displaying your business name or website URL. Option two, add a new license plate frame. On the license plate frame you can ad your business name and slogan. You can also add your website URL. Here you will have two lines and you can choose the size, color, and character of the letters to be displayed. You can also check your yellow pages for a listing of local companies.

Online Advertising

If you have a website you can submit your website to search engines and directories. The most popular search engines and directories where you have to put more effort to get listed, are Google, Yahoo!, MSN, and dmoz. But that's not enough, you have to build an strong presence by adding your website to other search engines and specially directories, so can can earn link popularity and receive more traffic. Just click here to manually submit your website to search engines and directories. If your business does not have a website; you still can add your business to online yellow pages like Yahoo! Local, SmartPages, SuperPages, etc. Another thing that you can do is buy ads online. Buying ads can get you where you want to be and the prices are from low to very high. Broadcast Industry Ripe for a Rebound

Radio advertising may be in for a rebound year if the economy remains relatively stable. Even an continued downturn may mean a better 2008 for most radio stations. Historically, radio has always performed well in a recession. Even niche formats like Christian radio stations, for example could do well this year.

Consider that the luster from Satellite radio is completely gone. The advertising community is now realizing that not only did Satellite radio not kill radio advertising but the two companies providing the service couldn't survive on their own. What's more, Internet radio listening is down even though Internet use is up. AOL and Yahoo have even contemplated dropping their own on-line radio stations due to a lack of support.

While iPods are here to stay, their explosive growth rate appears to be behind us. Just as television failed to do with it's rise in popularity in the 50's and 60's, the iPod craze did not deal radio stations a death blow. It appears that iPods will actually enhance the listening experience of "information when you want it" and the radio industry at large is exploring ways to strategically place advertising in the body of a podcast to still provide a viable means for an advertiser to reach his iPod friendly consumer.

Now that the competition of new technologies have reached their peak, it's time for radio advertising executives to once again bring out the benefits of radio and remind them that a well executed radio campaign can be one of the most cost effective advertising initiatives available today. Local radio is still the best way to reach mobile America with up to the minute information and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

Promotional Pens - A Few Ideas

Promotional pens are used all the time, so if you want to make the most of this promotional gift you need to find ideas for new and exciting pen types to distribute to your staff, clients and members of the public whom you hope will become customers. Advertising companies all over the world are working hard to come up with new and exciting ideas for pens to give out as corporate gifts or promotional items. Here are a few ideas you can try as part of your marketing campaign.

Pen Sets

Getting a pen as a gift is always appreciated, but somehow it does not create the same impression than a complete pen set in a case can. Pen sets take many forms, depending on how much you want to spend. You can find small plastic cases which contain a pen, pencil and a pad of sticky notes that can easily fit inside your pocket. If you are buying for executives and important clients, go for a stainless steel or wooden pen case with a stainless steel set including a ball point, a roller ball, a mechanical pencil and perhaps even a fountain pen. Have the case engraved with the person's name and you will have a loyal client for life.

Wacky Options

There are loads of ideas out there for weird and wonderful pens that have a huge novelty factor. You can find products in the shape of all manner of objects from surf-boards to missiles, or ones that have other uses besides writing. Laser pointer pens, with LEDs that last forever, ones with calculators, thermometers or laser measuring tapes are also easy to get hold of. Have a look for something novel and exciting, or just plain useful like a pen with a built in flash memory stick, an MP3 player and headphones.

As Business Tools

Pens can also serve dual functions as business gadgets. Laser pointers have already been mentioned, but there are many other functions that can be built into the simple pen. Products with timers on them, a USB memory stick built in or a voice recorder are all very useful things to have around the office. Not only are they novel and useful, but these gifts tell people that you value their role in growing your business. They show that you are interested in their professional wellbeing, and this creates a strong bond between a company and its clients.

Promotional pens are great gifts to give to just about anyone as part of a promotion, but it takes a little bit of thought to make an impact with these gifts. If you think you are going to bring in loads of business by giving out cheap plastic pens with your logo on them, think again! More than anything, people want you to impress them with your gift. Spend a little bit of money and take the time to find something really novel and you will definitely see good returns on your marketing investment.

What Comes Before and After Postcard Printing?

Postcards can be effective depending on how you use such as part of your marketing strategy. But the success of this ploy will only happen if you make the right decisions from the start.

1. Brainstorming of ideas. In any business, it is important to get a pool of people's opinion in the decision that you make about marketing your products and services. If you have decided to use postcards to market your products, gather people to know their thoughts.

2. Postcard printing. Make sure that you only avail the best service when it comes to this. A good printing company should have the capability to assist you beyond printing - this may come in the form of assistance, mailing, shipping and more.

Make sure to rely on a printing company that has been in the business for a long time and has a good reputation regarding its services.

3. Lists and direct mailing. This service can very well help you aim at a more defined market who are truly interested in you or your products. To reach the market that you had in mind, be sure to trust only reliable sources of consumer and business leads. This step can only but help you bring those cards to their rightful recipients.

Upon the completion of those three steps, your work is just starting. In business, you always have to be on the go. You need to be prepared for everything.

Follow Up

You have invested money on those postcards so it's natural that you will be concerned to what happened to them after they have been mailed out.

• Answer the queries. Make sure that you have delegated people for this task after the cards have been sent out. You should expect that people will call to ask for more details. Provide what's necessary because you have to remember that they are your clients. They have to know what they will get into before they commit on getting it.

• Stay true to your promise. Your postcards may have captured people's attention because you have promised them something in return for their patronage of your services. When they have done so, you should also stay true to what you have written on your postcards. Give them whatever hooked them to your cards, may it be items or discounts or technical assistance.

• Call out. If you are getting a low response from the mailed postcards, call out people to entice them more. If you have on your database the contact numbers of the people whom you gave out your postcards to, you may want to reach them to talk to them more and offer to explain the part of the scheme that they might be interested in.

By making a move to follow up on your marketing ploys, people will think that yours is a good business because you can afford to reach them in many ways possible. This way, it will be easier for them to seek your services out and rely on you for their needs.

After the postcard printing had been successfully executed, it is up to you to talk business and keep the customers coming in.

Offset Printing, Cutting the Cost Without Sacrificing the Quality

Offset printing, also known as lithographic printing, utilizes the four fundamental colors, the CMYK or cyan, magenta, yellow and black or the key color. Such colors are placed side by side forming defined patterns that create an illusion that the one who's looking at it sees so many variety of colors.

The colors pass through the plates and a rubber blanket and the part of the paper that wouldn't be needing colors are protected with water.

1. It's cheap but not in quality. The price is more affordable than the other methods because this uses processed inks and printing is made in bulk.

2. You can be creative with the color combinations because most of the companies that have this are open to suggestions as to what colors would you like to see with the final product.

3. The sizes for your projects can be customized according to your needs

4. You can choose from a variety of stocks wherein you want your projects to be printed on. It can be done on stocks as thick as cardboards or thin as paper. It just depends on what you choose and what are available on the printing company that you're dealing with.

5. Having chosen your stock, you can also request the company to add coatings to your materials for more protection with an additional cost. This method of printing is advisable to established and startup businesses, also for professionals wanting to advertise their services. With this process, you can create more types of promotional tool that would maximize your budget for such.

And with the assurance of quality from the printing company that will provide you with your needs, you can be assured that every product that goes through the process would be noticed and definitely stand out.

If you're looking for affordability and quality, offset printing is definitely for you. Such procedure will make the product lasts for a long period of time, thus maximizing its potential to market your products and services.

Before people would even read the texts that your ads contain, first they have to look and be curious about them. This can be done through your design. Use colors to further reach out for more eyes to look at your posters, but be careful that such would be pleasing to look at and would actually attract those who have seen them to read what they have to say.

Colors stir up people's emotions. Depending on your product and what your promo is all about, you should use the proper hues to go about such. For more on this, a guide with the meanings of colors can help you sort out what will suit your ad best.

How To Advertising Without Breaking Your Budget

Have you ever tried to come up with a method to increase your brand name, brand identity, or get your product out to a wide variety of consumers? It can be a daunting task there is a lot of media outlets touting their wares as the best.

While there is no silver bullet, no quick 'n easy solution there are ways to increase consumer awareness without spending a fortune. One method is putting your name on gadgets; you know baseball caps, writing pens, drinking cups, etc. The problem is that these 'gadgets' can be quite expensive and if you buy cheap trinkets, no one really wants them and they get tossed into a drawer, or trashcan.

Well what about bottled water? Bottled water is a rapidly growing industry that shows no signs of slowing anytime soon. Bottled water is cheap when bought in case lots. You can easily obtain several cases of bottled water for under $0.50 per bottle!

Okay, sound attractive? But how do you get your brand name on a bottle of water? It is easy just go to a bottler that provides private labels. They can print just about anything you want on a label affixed to a bottle of water.

Let's say you are a car dealer; Jones Ford; all you have to do is provide the bottler with your logo, and other pertinent information such as address, telephone number, web address, anything you want the public to know. The bottler will design a label (inexpensively) and bingo! Your name is on a bottle of water.

Now lets get those bottles out into the public. Check around your area, find events that are being held and give them your water. Local golf tournaments are handy and the people putting on the tournaments are always looking for 'give-a-ways'. You can provide a cooler with ice and your bottles at a Tee location and when the golfers come by they'll appreciate a cold bottle of water and as they drink the water they'll be handing a product branded with your logo and product (company) name. The best part is you are giving away a product (gadget) that will be used and appreciated by those receiving the water.

Other events that could work for your company are: Little League, Softball games; Track Meets; Tennis Tournaments; Soccer games; Fishing Tournaments; Hoop Shoots; Triathlon type events; Local walking trails; civic events, etc. Of course you should also just give away bottles of water to customers that visit your place of business If you operate a large flower/plant nursery you can provide cool water to those wandering through your grounds as they shop for landscaping. The important point is that customers always enjoy something free, especially when it is a product they will like and enjoy. When you provide something of real value to a customer or prospective customer, the gift will be appreciated and when it is appreciated it makes an impact - they will remember, they will recall your brand when they are looking for the products or services you supply.

For the price of $0.50 to $1.00 you can make a really statement with a bottle of water that carries your brand name, logo, and/or company name. Users of that bottle of water will be handling the product and they can't help but seeing your name! In advertising getting the customer to look and read your message is the major part of the battle. A simple bottle of water can be an important part of your overall advertising program and they will not break your budget.

Using A Photo "Brag Bag" To Promote Your Business

As a Direct Sales Consultant, one of your biggest challenges is to continue to meet potential new customers and recruits to keep your business growing. It is often uncomfortable when you are out in public to strike up conversations with others about your business. Carrying a Brag Bag Photo Purse will help you to advertise your business when you are out and about and attract potential customers to you!

Think of your Brag Bag as a walking Billboard. Carry it where ever you go - shopping, to your children's school and events, meetings, clubs, restaurants - potential customers are everywhere! Select the largest size Brag Bag that you are comfortable carrying. The most popular size is the nine pocket bag. It's the perfect size for showcasing your business and carrying your promotional information.

Begin by filling the clear pockets with eye catching items that represent your business. Display them in creative ways in each of the pockets. In the center pocket you may want to put your business card. Mount it on cardstock and mat it with a complimenting paper. To give it the finishing touches, use some inking, stamping, or chalking. Fill the remaining pockets with photos of your product and small samples. Again use cardstock cut to the size of the pocket to mount your photos on and give your samples a backing. Photos can be cut from your customer catalogs or taken yourself. If you are a scrapbook consultant, create mini-scrapbook layouts in some of the pockets. Just be creative and have fun designing your bag to reflect your business and personality!

Inside your bag, keep information packets ready to hand out and also your booking calendar to schedule parties, demonstrations, classes or appointments. In your information packet include things such as: your product catalog, schedule of events, recruiting information, samples or whatever else is applicable to your business. Your information packets could be contained in white, colored or even clear envelopes. Clear envelopes are fantastic for showing off your materials and giving them an extra sparkle! On the outside of your envelope attach your business card. This can be done with a glue stick, photo mounting squares, or a number of other adhesives. Again, let your information packets reflect your business and style.

You'll find that carrying your bag in public will draw people to you. It's an automatic conversation starter! People will comment on your bag and this will give you the opportunity to begin a conversation with them. Be prepared with your "one minute" business commercial. This should include: asking them if they have ever heard of or tried your companies products, a short description of what you offer and an invitation to do business with you. Keep your pitch warm, sincere, and focused on how your product can meet their needs. In closing, ask if you may call them after they have had a chance to review your material. Keep contact cards or a small notebook in your bag for collecting their name and other contact information.

You'll be astonished at how the Brag Bag will change your business by making conversing in public a breeze!

Steps to Effective Cable Advertising

As a small business on a limited budget, you may think that you don't have the money to venture into television advertising. But with the advent of dozens of cable stations television has become affordable advertising for local businesses.

With television, you have the opportunity to create a mood or a feeling, and a way to reach a mass audience, no other medium today has the unique creative abilities of television. Visual media has a big advantage over radio or print, in that it speaks to sight and hearing, our most immediate senses. The combination of pictures and music, motion and sound create the best opportunity to demonstrate your product or service and to get an immediate, visceral response from your viewer.

The television medium also has the most punch with viewers, as nearly half of the viewing audience believes that television is the most authoritative advertising source. Today, with more than 55 national cable networks in the U.S., along with a handful of superstations, your ability to target specific viewer groups is improved.

Viewership is also another plus. Cable households watch more television than non-cable TV households. The heaviest viewers are middle-income, high school educated individuals and their families. The average home has TV / Cable / VCR on for 8.5 hours every day; children and teenagers view an average of 17.5 to 17.8 hours per week, around the world, older women watch TV the most (36 hours per week).

The same rules apply for buying air time as with radio-let your advertising reps present their best offer, take your time to understand your options, and play with ad schedules to suite your budget and when your customers might be watching.

TV is good for delivery of certain messages to large, well-defined audiences, and it has no match for developing image and brand reinforcement messages. TV reaches many stakeholders - not just customers - to build awareness about your business.

The procedures for buying national media can be so complex that most large advertisers seek the assistance of ad agencies or media-buying services. But local advertisers are well served by station reps to determine the best buys for the money. And local production services are available at reasonable fees, perhaps even discounted by the cable company. You can even purchase stock commercials and add your imprint and contact information for as little as $500.

Here are the steps to purchasing a cable TV ad schedule:

Research available time slots: your ad rep will tell you what programs are available and how they match your needs for price range and ratings.

Choose targeted programs: decide on the most efficient programs in relation to the target audience using the cost per rating point (CPP) and cost per thousand (CPM) for each program.

Negotiate prices: the cable company will have a rate card describing the prices for different television stations, but these are always negotiable. Lower rates may be had with a longer-term commitment, or more flexibility in scheduling. A preemption rate, for instance, means you agree to be rescheduled of another advertiser pays the higher rate.

Sign a contract: This legal document states the program, dates and times of airing, length and rate for spots, total value, and other various obligations and terms. After your flight is complete, you should receive an affidavit of performance proving when your spots were aired.

Planning for a Digital Signage Network

For retailers considering implementation of a digital signage system, there are many costs and other planning factors to consider. In this article we will outline the main areas to focus on as you begin planning your network.

Assessing the Reasons for A Digital Signage Network

When planning for digital signage, you should begin with an initial assessment of the purpose and value of the project. Some points to consider include:

Objectives - Are you looking specifically for sales lift? Are you looking to enhance customer experience or educate customers about new product lines? Would you like to draw an audience with a news feed? Is it feasible for you to sell ad space on your digital signage network and earn some revenue for your business?

Anticipated Cost Savings - A realistic outlook on potential cost savings is part of ROI analysis. Will digital signage help you reduce traditional advertising costs? Where will the savings be seen?

Implementation - Where will the hardware go? Who will provide content?

With the initial assessment done you can then move onto a more detailed plan.

A Digital Signage Network Plan

A formal plan for your digital signage network needs to consider many aspects of implementation. When creating your plan, be sure to include the following points:

Appearance - What will you include in your digital display? Will you segment content into different areas? How will you decide when to change content?

Frequency - How often will your content be played? How long will each segment be? You need to consider the length of time the average customer is likely to spend watching the display when deciding how often each "loop" of content should be.

Sales Data - Truly effective digital displays factor in sales and demographic data that allow you to target specific sets of customers at the times they are most likely to be shopping. As part of your planning, ensure you consider how to incorporate this valuable data.

Content - Where will your content come from? Do you have an internal source to create content or will you have to outsource this important job?

Your plan must also consider costs. A detailed budget is a must. It should factor in the costs of:

Administering the Project - Digital signage requires adequate resources for planning and management.

Content - Be sure you have considered the type of content - text, video, or animation - and the cost of staffing the work of content creation. If you are considering a news feed, who will provide it?

Technology - This includes not only the hardware but the software to run the network, training in how to use the hardware and software, and installation. When budgeting for hardware, make sure you include the type of display, the mounting hardware, audio, and network connections. Also remember to budget for technical support.

With the right planning and an accurate budget, you can ensure your digital signage network achieves your goals and gives you an excellent return on investment.

What Fonts Say About Your Business

Having the right font or typeface in your marketing campaign such as your advertising flyers is as important as getting the right picture to accompany the message you want to convey. Your font is vital in getting your target clients attracted to your ads. Each style will definitely determine how your target readers would react to your ad. And your fonts would definitely be able to influence your target audience's buying decisions based on its impact.

For you to be able to understand better your choice of fonts, flyer printing companies have come up with some ideas to help you select the most appropriate fonts for your ads:

1 - If you want to be known as a traditional kind of business, serif fonts work best. This font style shows short lines that come from the upper and lower ends of the strokes of the letter. Very popular of this type is the Times New Roman.

What does it mean? Your organization is someone your target audience can rely on because you are stable, credible and very much in tune with what is conventional and established in terms of providing customer service.

2 - Sans Serif fonts on the other hand don't have the lines at the upper and lower ends of the strokes. Arial and Helvetica are the most common sand serif fonts that most high tech companies use in their ads and websites.

What does it mean? As sans serif fonts appear more modern and innovative, it is definitely the favorite font used by many businesses dealing with the Internet and other technological industry. It provides a dynamic and up-to-date quality to your business if you need to come out as fresh and inventive.

3 - Italics on the other hand exude grace and a relaxation. It reflects elegance and style, and yet it often shows consumers that the company is forward-looking and progressive.

4 - Trendy fonts are often stand outs that they have become so popular these days. Nevertheless, maintaining this kind of font can be hard work as you need to frequently update and keep it from being outdated.

5 - Different gradient and thickness in the lines of your typeface also plays a crucial role in the way you convey your message. It tells the kind of message you would want to tell your audience. If you want a more industrial and solid feel to your message then go for the thicker lines. On the other hand, if you want crisper and cleaner look, go for the lighter and thinner lines.

So the next time you select your font, choose the best typeface that exemplifies the kind of image you would want to be remembered by your target clients. The right font can help you send the right message to your audience.

Even if you're an advertiser, you're also a consumer. So think about all the media YOU are exposed to in a day. Can you remember any of the advertising you saw, heard, or looked at today?

The average American is exposed to thousands of marketing messages a day. Think about all the advertising mediums you are exposed to each day; television, radio, Internet, billboards, magazines, and newspaper. Perhaps now you can understand how hard it can be to be remembered by the average consumer.

You know that YOU need to hear a message more than once before you'll decide to take action... or at least remember the new business you want to try.

There's a term in advertising--'breaking through the clutter.' And there's more clutter than ever before. Have you had the pleasure of finding advertisements in a public restroom yet? If not, you will.

So obviously, you have to get people to remember you before they buy from you. This is especially true if they don't need what you want to sell them today. But they will eventually, right? Remember, you can't sell a refrigerator to someone who doesn't need one. But if you develop a consistent advertising presence, you will build awareness in potential customers, almost without them even realizing it. So when that old Frigidaire does give out, the prospect will remember a source for affordable appliances delivered to their home.

Creating awareness about your business-along with a descriptive, evocative slogan, will pay off when people are ready to buy. It can be as few as two words-Got Milk?™--or three-Just Do It™. A slogan is a phrase-a motto, a saying, a tag line, whatever you like-that expresses a particular concept that you want to stick in your audience's mind.

What makes a slogan memorable? Brevity, rhythm, repetition, vivid language.

Slogans come in many formats.

A feature: It keeps going, and going, and going...

An entreaty: Don't leave home without it. Let your fingers do the walking. Just do it.

An endorsement: They're grrrreat! Finger lickin' good!

A question: Got milk? Does she or doesn't she?

A benefit: Melts in your mouth, not in your hand. Tastes great, less filling.

A rationale: Because I'm worth it. It's everywhere you want to be.

A statement: A diamond is forever. Beef... it's what's for dinner.

An assurance: What happens here, stays here. Have it your way

There are seven ways to make a slogan memorable:

(1) Make it exciting

(2) Be boastful or exaggerated

(3) Self-referencing

(4) Metaphorical, playful or humorous

(5) Inspirational or uplifting

(6) To trigger painful memories or possibilities

(7) Use of colorful or fresh language

Sometimes a slogan becomes an indelible icon .... "The Real Thing" was used for which soft drink ...?

Where do you start to build a slogan? The most obvious is to hire a professional who brings a certain level of expertise to this crucial business decision. Professionals don't simply write some words...They create icons.

What do I want people to think of when they think of my business?

Ask yourself, "What do I want them to do?" This is another type of slogan. Yellow pages had a great one for years, "Let your fingers do the walking."

Another way to create a slogan is to take two phrases that have parallel construction and place them together with a comma. Ex: Prizefighter Ali, "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

Add a slogan or a tag line to your marketing plan and you could become an icon that's Finger Lickin' Good!

Word Of Mouth - To The Max

How do you rise above marketing clutter and stick in the minds of your customers - A great slogan? A memorable commercial? A stand-out logo? All three are very important - Let's view these as "Hooks". Once a potential customer is on the hook, you have their attention for a very limited time, don't loose it! This is where the "Call to Action" comes into play. We're going to examine a "Call to Action" often times over-looked - the very powerful "Customer Testimonial".

What your customer has to say about you in their own words, is one of the most powerful marketing tools in your "call to action" arsenal. If what your customers say is positive, USE IT! It may be in the form of an e-mail, it may be a verbal "I love what you do" mentioned in passing, whatever it is - you need to let other potential customers know about it. Not because you want to boast about how great you are, but because your potential customers WANT TO KNOW WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU. Offer it up, because they are looking for it.

When you re-iterate a quote from a satisfied customer, you are sending out an un-spoken message of Competency and Trust-worthiness (the two most important things in growing your business). You wont be coming across as boasting or bragging, because you're not the one saying how great you are - a customer is saying it...About You! Now that is powerful. Furthermore, If you do have very satisfied customers, there is nothing wrong with letting the world know about it! Remember - your potential customers WANT TO KNOW WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU.

The next time you get that positive thank you email save it! If you hear a positive comment in passing, ask that happy customer if they would be so kind as to drop you an email or a letter explaining their thoughts about your products or services (maybe give them a discount or a coupon for their time).

These little gems of feedback are priceless when it comes to building a great reputation for your business. They can be used in any and every form of marketing. Put them on your website, have them repeated in radio commercials, lay them out in print. Just be sure to use them, and use them often!

I've helped many of my clients translate these quotes from clients into effective radio commercials and eye-catching graphics for web and print use. I would love the opportunity to help you too! Feel free to call or email anytime to discuss how we can communicate the positive reviews you receive to the masses!
